Iberia has restarted services between Spain and Japan with the launch of flights from Madrid to Tokyo’s Narita Airport.
The IAG-owned carrier said it is offering the only non-stop flight between the two countries. The route, which last operated in 2020, will fly three times per week using Airbus A350 aircraft fitted with economy, premium economy and business class cabins.
The Tokyo route is part of Iberia’s plans to expand its presence in Asia after launching flights from Madrid to Doha in December 2023.
The Madrid-Tokyo route becomes Iberia’s longest route in its schedule, with a 14-hour travel time outbound from Madrid and a 16-hour flight back from Tokyo.
Both flights will fly eastwards meaning that Iberia will complete a circumnavigation of the world. This is due to the closure of Russian airspace to EU-based airlines since the start of the war in Ukraine in early 2022.
Marco Sansavini, president of Iberia, said: “From today we are offering the only option that connects Spain with Japan directly, without stopovers, and we do so three times a week, which means around 90,000 seats between both countries in the first year of operation.
“Our ambition is to increase flight frequencies in 2025 to offer many more possibilities to travellers.”
