The Grand Hyatt Barcelona has officially opened in the Spanish city as Hyatt continues its expansion in Europe.
The 465-room newly refurbished property was previously part of Hyatt’s Unbound Collection when it was known as Hotel Sofia Barcelona.
The move doubles Grand Hyatt’s presence in Spain – the brand already operates Grand Hyatt La Manga Club Golf & Spa in southern Spain as part of its growing European portfolio, which now increases to five properties.
Grand Hyatt Barcelona is located in the city’s upmarket Alta district close to major attractions such as the Monastery of Pedralbes and the Camp Nou football stadium where Barcelona FC plays its home games.
Facilities include a 19th floor rooftop Peruvian restaurant Maymanta, as well as the Leña steakhouse, tapas bar and coffee shop.
There are also 22 meeting rooms offering a total of more than 3,400 square metres of space, with the largest room measuring 864 sqm.
Javier Águila, Hyatt’s group president, EAME (Europe, Africa and Middle East), said: “An iconic and emblematic landmark in Barcelona, the hotel embraces the lavish style of the Grand Hyatt brand, coupled with a captivating experience.
“As the second Grand Hyatt property in Spain, today’s opening reflects our accelerated brand growth in Spain and more broadly in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and showcases our continued commitment to delivering world-class hospitality.”
The property’s renovation has included work to “enhance decarbonisation by phasing out fossil fuels as the primary source of energy”. The hotel has also achieved LEED Gold certification for energy efficiency.
The original Hotel Princesa Sofia opened in the 1970s. It was later renamed InterContinental Princesa Sofia in 1996 and then Gran Hotel Princesa Sofia eight years later.
